More or Less BBC Radio 4

My favourite Radio 4 programme is back with a new series. If you haven't caught up with it yet, may I recommend More or Less, Radio 4, Fridays, 1.30 pm? Hosted by Tim Harford, the programme explains the use of mathematics – and challenges many of the everyday abuses of mathematics – in, for example, politics, business, advertising and the media.

Last Friday's programme was an entertaining exploration of the pros and cons of various voting systems. I think the conclusion seemed to be that the fairest system seems to be that used in the Eurovision song contest!

About Derek Haylock

Derek is an education consultant and author. He worked for over 30 years in teacher education, both initial and in-service, and was Co-Director of Primary Initial Teacher Training and responsible for the mathematics components of the primary programmes at the University of East Anglia (UEA) Norwich. He has considerable practical experience of teaching and researching in primary classrooms. His work in mathematics education has taken him to Germany, Belgium, Lesotho, Kenya, Brunei and India. He works as a consultant for both the Training and Development Agency for Schools and the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency. As well as his extensive publications in the field of education, which include a number of bestselling books, he has written seven books of Christian drama for young people and a Christmas musical (published by Church House/National Society).
