The post in the river was indicating the maximum clearance under the upcoming bridge.
When I saw it the clearance was 3.75 metres, as indicated by the level of the water. If the water level rose, say, by 0.5 of a metre, then the clearance would go down by 0.5 metres and the water would be lapping around the 3.25 metres mark.
